Job Description
The Center for Statistics and Machine Learning (CSML) was established in 2014 as Princeton University’s hub for education and research activities in statistics, machine learning, and the data sciences. CSML seeks a professional experienced in the research environment to manage the operations and strategic growth of the Center for a period of 6 months to one year.
The Center includes four core faculty plus the director, five administrative and technical staff, two full-time lecturers; 14 research staff (postdocs, data scientists, research software engineers, visitors); the second largest undergraduate certificate program on campus with approximately 240 students currently enrolled and a graduate certificate program with approximately 70 graduate students enrolled.
The assistant director represents the Center and the Director, serving as a liaison both internally and externally. The assistant director reports to the Director, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Manager for Academic Administration in the Office of Human Resources. The tasks of the assistant director include:
• Ensuring the Center's smooth and effective administrative operations, including supervision of the Center’s administrative personnel, monitoring of the operating expenditures, and oversight of all building operations and renovations.
• Ensuring all internal deadlines are met and that the Center complies with all internal guidelines and external regulations.
Management and Administration
• Staff performance, management, merit increase, and salary reviews processes, and professional development for the Center's administrative and technical staff (currently five).
• Oversee and process the Center's research staff appointments, reappointments and terminations.
• Oversee the management of the Center and its space, including renovations, space planning and allocations, and plans for the projected growth of the center.
• Assist in the growth of CSML in terms of funding, faculty hiring, visitors, postdoctoral fellows, and the admission of graduate students through a joint multi-department pool.
Academic Instruction
• The Center's academic activities will grow and adapt to best meet students' educational needs and the co-curricular training needs of graduate students and postdocs.
• The assistant director will work with the director, faculty, staff, and relevant academic units to launch the SML minor program and enhance the SML graduate certificate program. This includes working with staff to implement new strategic initiatives.
Strategic Planning and Execution
• Key partner, facilitator, and coordinator, of all new strategic initiatives for the center – academic and research-focused.
• Liaison with the Office of Development.
Research, Events, Outreach
• Oversee organizing, coordinating, and executing prominent events such as prestigious invited speakers, lecture series, and talks by industry visitors.
• Outreach to academic partners on topics of shared interest, such as course curricula, software tools, datasets, and other resources.
Sponsored Research, and Financial Management
• Responsible for carefully and appropriately managing the Center's finances.
• Monitor spending and provide regular and timely analysis and projections of the available funds to the Director.
• Responsible for submitting (or by appropriate delegation) all sponsored research proposals and managing all awards for the center.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5-7 years’ experience in an administrative position that includes supervisory experience
- Demonstrated experience in oversight of financial operations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to anticipate and initiate appropriate action in support of the Director and Center faculty
- Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Proficiency in desktop computing tools and software, including Outlook, Google Workspace, MS Office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree, preferred
- Experience in higher education
